Regenerative capabilities. Neotenic tendencies. Critically endangered. A few hallmarks of the axolotl. The axolotl is considered to be one of the world’s most unusual and unique species of salamanders.

The Axolotl has inspired many for generations. From contributions in science — everything from cancer to tissue repair — to the theological history as the animal form of the Aztec god Xolotl.

From The Tao of Axolotl by William Douglas Horden:

“The axolotl as a symbol is representative of great creative power and independent action — a symbol of a being that integrates the positive characteristics of childhood and adulthood by not taking on the negative characteristics of adulthood. It is the symbol of the Ancient Child…Fortune favors those who are adapted ahead of time. The Way of Axolotl goes against the current of culture and family, which generally seeks to channel people into pigeonholes where their lives become highly routinized, seeking instead to keep open the individual’s possibilities to realize his or her potential…the Way of Axolotl seeks to create a meaningful society by affording individuals the opportunity to create meaningful lives for themselves.”

I like to think I am like this little critter. Forever existing as a woman-child; following the Tao of Axolotl. Encountering life and losing parts of my old self only to regenerate and be ready to try again.

Unusual, unique and completely Mell.
